Flame the little Agile Wallaby who fought so hard to survive.
Flame’s story begins on October 16th 2024, when a little girl discovered him all alone near a recently burnt cane field. The tiny wallaby, just 800 grams, had been badly burned. His feet, hocks, hands, ears, and tail bore burns from the fire, with the tops of his ears so damaged that they eventually fell off. Despite his injuries, He was taken to a wildlife carer named Emily who took him to the vets and started his intensive care. and started to nurse him to health and gave him the nickname “Flame,” a nod to the fire that marked the start of his extraordinary journey.
When Flame came into Jody’s care on November 5th, he was still healing and required intensive treatment. For a week and a half, he was subcut to help him regain his strength. On November 20th, he stood for the first time since his ordeal, a significant milestone for such a small and determined creature. Actual walking came about three weeks later, but it was clear his recovery would be a long road.

Flame’s feet, hands and ears healed beautifully, and his hocks, though still recovering, looked much better every day. His tail had a permanent kink, and the top section was dead. This told the story of his struggles.
Every day flame was taken out of his pouch to help him rebuild his muscles. His tail often got in the way, he was learning to navigate around it, slowly but surely. Watching him relearn how to move and find his strength was nothing short of inspiring.
However, just before Christmas, Flame’s fight came to an unexpected and heartbreaking end. Despite all efforts, including those of his veterinary team, he developed an infection in his tail that spread rapidly through his body. His little body, already so battered by the fire, could not overcome this final challenge.
